Working Families to ICE Field Office: Let Genoveva Ramirez-Laguna stay!

May 29, 2017

Ricardo Wong
Field Office Director
Immigration and Customs Enforcement

Dear Director Wong,

On behalf of 33rd Ward Working Families, we are writing to express support for Genoveva Ramirez-Laguna (A# 098 928 516). We are an independent political organization based in Chicago's 33rd Ward, which includes the neighborhoods of Albany Park, Avondale, Irving Park, and Ravenswood Manor. We promote the needs of working families, including immigrants, through political organizing, advocacy, and education.

Our organization was recently informed that Ms. Ramirez-Laguna has been scheduled for an appointment with the Chicago Field Office on Tuesday, May 30, 2017. We are deeply concerned for her well-being. She is a 67- year-old grandmother, long-time union member and beloved community leader in the Chicagoland area. She was placed in deportation proceedings after a routine traffic stop and has received numerous grants of deferred action in the past. She has not been required to check-in with ICE since 2015.

Ms. Genoveva Ramirez-Laguna is a hard working person and a vocal leader in her union, the Services Employees International Union (SEIU) Local 1, where she has shown dedication for ensuring her fellow co-worker's’ rights are respected. Through her organizing with Organized Communities Against Deportations (OCAD), Ms. Genoveva Ramirez-Laguna has also demonstrated knowledge and strength when participating in mobilizations for immigrant and civil rights. Since Ms. Genoveva Ramirez-Laguna became a leader in her community, her contributions extend beyond the organizations she volunteers with. Moreover, Ms. Genoveva Ramirez-Laguna is a loving grandmother who has become an essential part in the fight against injustices in our city and surrounding areas.

On behalf of 33rd Ward Working Families, we urge you to grant Ms. Genoveva Ramirez-Laguna’s stay of removal to ensure that she remains with her family in Berwyn, Illinois and continues to be a vibrant and important member of our community.

Thank you,

Rebecca Burns
